March 11, 2011 Update
The Use of Time advisory committee received a significant amount of feedback on the draft 2011-2012 school calendar.  Thanks for letting us know how you feel about starting before or after Labor Day and the scheduling of time for professional development.  The RSU5 Board heard comments on next year’s calendar and will consider this feedback before making a decision.  The Board anticipates making a decision at their meeting on Wednesday, March 23rd with final adoption of the calendar anticipated for April 27th. Many people have been involved in the development process and we are very pleased with the healthy, respectful debate this issue has generated.  It is always a challenge to balance competing demands and the Board appreciates hearing your feedback.  Thank you for being involved in the process!

February 18, 2011 Update

The Use of Time advisory committee has presented recommendations and a draft calendar for 2011-2012 to the Board. The committee is seeking feedback from the public by March 4th to inform their final recommendations. Key recommendations in this year’s calendar are:

1. The elimination of early release and late arrival sessions in order to increase student learning time. (This recommendation is supported by the Board).

2. The addition of two teacher days (with the intention of adding more in the future, if finances permitted) to replace some of the lost professional learning time as a result of the recommendation above. The Board expressed a desire to maximize the amount of professional learning time but cautioned for the need to take incremental steps to achieve that goal.

3. Questions remain about the following and your feedback would be helpful.

A.   Does the RSU5 community prefer a “before or after” Labor Day start of the school year for students?

B.    Are the scheduled professional learning days appropriately placed given our district and building professional development needs?

For more about the recommendations from the committee, see their draft calendar here. And, please do send your feedback to calendarfeedback@rsu5.org by Friday, March 4th so the committee can consider your thoughts.
